Privately we've started describing certain beers this way – those which walk a tightrope between past and present.

We got quite fed up of that joke about 15 years ago!
I mean, for me, it was quite a useful "in my own head" descriptor of a certain type of brown beer (that I didn't much care for), but, yes, more broadly, no more useful than "hoppy"...
